Cologne Clash Sets Tone For Group Stage

Switzerland Start Euro 2024 with Hard-Fought 3-1 Win Over Hungary

Cologne Clash Sets Tone for Group Stage

Switzerland kicked off their Euro 2024 journey with a convincing 3-1 triumph over Hungary in a tight contest in Cologne. The victory highlighted the importance of the opening clash as Germany's resounding 5-1 win over Scotland in the tournament opener had set the tone for a competitive group stage.

In the first half, Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer put Switzerland in control with clinical goals, giving them a 2-0 lead heading into the break. The second half saw a spirited Hungarian response, but Xherdan Shaqiri's strike sealed the victory for the Swiss, despite a late consolation from Roland Sallai.

Duah and Aebischer Set the Stage

Switzerland's offense came out firing, with Duah opening the scoring in the 20th minute. The 22-year-old striker found space in the Hungarian box and confidently slotted the ball past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi. Just seven minutes later, Aebischer doubled the Swiss advantage with a superb finish from outside the area.

Despite Hungary's efforts to get back into the game, Switzerland maintained control of the match. Their defense held firm, with goalkeeper Yann Sommer making several关键saves to keep the Hungarians at bay.

Shaqiri Seals the Deal

Hungary did manage to pull one back in the 70th minute through Sallai's deflected effort. However, Shaqiri's goal in the 83rd minute put the game beyond doubt. The Liverpool forward capitalized on a Hungarian defensive lapse to secure the crucial three points for his team.

Switzerland's victory puts them in a strong position in Group A, setting the stage for an exciting remainder of the tournament. Hungary, on the other hand, will need to regroup and find a way to bounce back in their upcoming matches.
